Nursing at Central Maine Healthcare
At Central Maine Healthcare, our mission is to provide exceptional healthcare services in a safe environment, through the expertise, commitment and compassion of our caregivers.
Our nurses embody this mission by following a Nursing Practice model focused on relationship-based care, ensuring that patients and family are at the center of all we do. By nurturing communication between healthcare teams and with our patients and their families, our nurses strive for caring conversations that help anticipate each individual’s needs.
Nursing Vision
In order to create a nurturing environment, the vision of our Nursing Department is to employ passionate, professional nurses who provide high-quality holistic care to our patients. We believe that the practice of holistic nursing promotes an environment for optimal well-being of the body, mind and spirit.
We combine our vision to employ passionate and professional nurses with our philosophy of professional excellence by evolving the creative art and science of nursing. Patients are treated as members of our own families, with a focus on dignity, respect and what matters to them. We include our patients and their family members in all aspects of decision-making in order to provide what matters most — at the time it matters most.
CMH nurses fulfill many roles within their patient’s care team besides providing direct patient care. They often serve as educators, interpreters and advocates for our patients. This includes helping our patients and their families understand the health issues they’re facing and the potential resources available to them, while serving as their advocate in order to promote the best possible outcome for each patient.

Nursing Practice Model
The CMH practice model exemplifies a culture that empowers and supports nurses to advance their professional development from Novice to Expert. This means helping them stay on top of the ever-changing healthcare industry through our Professional Advancement Program, TeamSTEPPS program and other career opportunities. By focusing on their professional growth, our nurses learn how to make positive changes that directly impact our patients.
By making this investment in our nursing team members, we hope to show them how appreciated they are for the specialized contribution they make every day in the delivery of healthcare and their ability to positively affect care and outcomes of our patients. We believe this is essential to provide the highest quality care to our patients in today’s healthcare environment.

Advanced Technology
The thought of surgery can feel daunting. But with new innovative surgical options at Central Maine Healthcare, it doesn’t have to mean a lengthy hospital stay or recovery.
Our board-certified surgeons specialize in the latest minimally invasive techniques for a wide range of procedures, both common and complex. These laparoscopic options involve just a few tiny incisions, plus small specialized tools and cameras placed inside the body.
Compared to traditional open surgery, these techniques may offer you a variety of benefits, such as:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Fewer complications
- Shorter recovery time
- Shorter (or no) hospital stay
- Faster return to the life you love
Full Range of Options
Common minimally invasive procedures we perform include:
- Appendix removal
- Colon surgery
- Complex bowel and colon resections
- Ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures
- Hernia repair
- Hysterectomy and other gynecological procedures
- Gallbladder removal
- Tumor removal
- Orthopaedic procedures for the knees, hips, ankles and shoulders
- Urologic procedures
- Weight loss (bariatric) procedures
Healing in the Comfort of Home
With our minimally invasive approach, many of our patients can avoid an overnight hospitalization. In fact, each of our main locations throughout central and western Maine includes a fully accredited same-day surgery unit. Depending on the type of surgery and your unique needs, we may have you home within hours of your procedure.
Prior to your surgery date, you’ll have meet with one of our pre-admission nurses to walk through all instructions and arrange any necessary tests.
After surgery, you’ll rest in the unit under the observation of one of our dedicated nurses and/or your doctor. We ensure you have recovered from anesthesia and are prepared for self-care at home. Usually within a few hours, you will be able to leave with a family member or other caregiver.
Same-day surgery is not right for everyone. Your surgeon, anesthesiologist and care team will work together and with you to help determine the best solution for your health.

Why Choose Us
Every day, Central Maine Healthcare helps patients throughout our community bring their best to the battle against cancer. Here are just a few of the ways we’re bringing hope and healing to our communities:
Everybody Working Together to Beat Cancer
At Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center (CMCCC), all the treatment you need is together under one roof: surgery, radiation and medical oncology. That’s not only convenient for you but it allows us to easily unify our efforts. Our doctors, specialists, and nurses – plus social workers, dietitians, rehabilitation therapists and more – all work near each other and closely together to consider and regularly discuss the treatment plan that will produce the best possible results for each patient.
Commitment to Patients
Many of our nurses and therapists have been working with Central Maine Healthcare for 15 – 20 years, showing great dedication to their patients and devotion to the central Maine community.
Fast Diagnosis, Quick Path to Treatment
Our onsite labs allow us to make fast, accurate diagnoses. And if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, we understand you want to start treatment as soon as possible. Our radiation therapy group is set up to get you in quickly, so you can begin on the road to better health.
Infusion Centers Throughout Central Maine
Whether you’re near Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital or Rumford Hospital, you’re close to one of our dedicated infusion centers. That means you can receive cancer treatment close to home.
CMCCC is Fully Accredited and Often Awarded
We’ve been accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
Friendly, Compassionate Care
We’re proud of the sense of family our caregivers feel at CMCC. You’re not just a number on a medical chart. We know your name and make a point of getting to know you and your family. We believe it’s the best way to provide a comfortable, healing environment that allows excellent care.
