The State of Maine funded the four ACGME Sponsoring Institutions in Maine to create a first-of-its-kind collaboration in Maine to develop high quality rural residency rotations at hospitals and community-based healthcare center across the state with a focus on giving medical residents experience caring for Maine’s diverse socio-economic, racial and regional populations.
CMMC FMR has a long history of commitment to rural education. Currently, we are a member of the Maine Rural Graduate Medical Education (MERGE) Collaborative, which is a partnership between the four Sponsoring Institutions in the state to expand rural training opportunities. The goal of this innovative collaboration is to develop high quality rural residency rotations at hospitals and community-based healthcare centers across the state with a focus on caring for Maine’s socio-economic, racial and regional populations. To date, MERGE has created over 30 training sites in rural communities across Maine available to residents in all MERGE Collaborative sites, including CMMC.

Program Overview
CMMC Family Medicine Residency Academic Programs
Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency (CMMC FMR) is a 7-7-7 ACGME certified program with an osteopathic recognition track and rural training. Founded in 1978, CMMC FMR has graduated over 160 family physicians. Our program prepares physicians to practice family medicine in communities with populations ranging from 500 to 500,000.
The residency is based at the Oscar Treat Turner Family Medicine Center, an outpatient health center on CMMC’s main campus in Lewiston, Maine. We also have additional continuity clinics in Rumford at the Swift River Family Medicine office and provide first contact care to undergraduate students at Bates College in Lewiston. We are the only residency in our sponsoring hospital, allowing our residents to easily gain experience in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. Our curriculum provides opportunities for further training in many areas of family medicine including integrative medicine, geriatrics, sports medicine, neuromusculoskeletal medicine, public health and others as directed by each resident’s specific learning goals. We expose residents to Lewiston and surrounding rural communities early in their training to inspire them for where their education can lead. CMMC also offers a fellowship in hospital medicine and provides clinical and educational training opportunities to third and fourth-year medical students.
Located on the banks of the Androscoggin River, Lewiston is the second largest city in Maine, and the cultural and services hub of Central Maine. Our diverse city has a small town feel and welcoming community. Local access to arts, culture, outdoor recreation, and nationally recognized academic institutions are supplemented by convenient proximity to the mountains of Western Maine, the Atlantic Ocean, and other major cities such as Portland and Boston, all of which make Lewiston a fantastic home base to explore Maine and Northern New England.
